Hi, I’m Moorea!
| WRITER | ACADEMIC RESEARCHER | DIGITAL MARKETER | FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE GRADUATE | CONTENT CREATOR| BRCA1 BREAST CANCER PREVIVOR |
I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Communication (Cum Laude) at the University of Colorado, Denver, and I am a proud member of the Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society. I am the first person in my immediate family to graduate from college, and one of the first (in my immediate family) to graduate from high school. I grew up in a rural town in Colorado, and moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 2016.
I enjoy hiking, traveling, cooking, and exploring new coffee shops. I spend most of my free time in Old Town, Alexandria in Virginia. It’s a beautiful and historical town that is close to Washington, DC!
Something unique about me? I am a BRCA1 positive breast cancer previvor. I underwent a preventative double mastectomy at the age of 26. I lowered my breast cancer risk from 90%+ to less than 2%. I continued to build my career and finish my Bachelor’s degree, while simultaneously recovering from a major surgery and raising awareness for the breast cancer and BRCA1 positive community. I am a member of The Breasties, the first all-inclusive nonprofit organization that creates community for survivors, previvors, stage 4 thrivers, and caregivers impacted by breast and gynecologic cancers.
In my spare time, I am an advocate for quality healthcare in the cancer community, and I continue to raise awareness on genetic variants that increase cancer risk.
